LAST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH CLUB BACKGROUND INFORMATION (LWM) 
 

The Origin of the group was started by some Engineers of the Construction Division assigned to La Guardia Airport.  When some of the group began to retire, the active group arranged for the retirees to join them once a month, on the last Wednesday thus, the Last Wednesday of the Month Club was born.  Since most of the early members were long time associates of Tony Debiase, he began to attend in 1974.  In those early days, there were generally 10 to 15 in attendance, and sometimes less than 10.  A notable increase in attendance at the luncheon began in 1995.

It took a few years before the Club started the monthly newsletter that followed the luncheon of 01/26/77 at Steinway Brauhall, 28-24 Steinway Street, Astoria, Queens, NY, which was attended by the following ten (10) individuals: Alfarano, Amlung, Buchanan, Crandall, De Jary, Huie, Matschulat, Mc Aleer, Neary, and Riemenschnieder.  The Newsletter also had information about various members who had been present at the luncheon.  After 43 issues, there was a lapse in publication of several months, when Tony Debiase took over with Bruit #44 in 05/81.  With occasional help from Dick Dolan and Mike Alfarano, Tony continued until April 1988, when he encountered medical problems.  As a result, Bernie Gelman elected to handle the monthly Luncheon as well as the Newsletter.

It is worthy of note, that in 1983 while the late Ted Endresen was President of the former Port Service Club (25 Years and Over) THE LAST WEDNESDAY CLUB BECAME A RECOGNIZED ACTIVITY OF THE FORMER PORT SERVICE CLUB.

Through the years, the Club has met at various restaurants in the NY Metro Area. The Steinway Brauhall, Cadillac Terrace, Star Garden, Sirena Ristorante, Vittorio Danza, and Joe's, all in Queens,  Charlie's Inn and Clam Casino in Throggs Neck.  Since 1990, the Club has met in Fort Lee, NJ, and now called "IN NAPOLI RESTAURANT, formerly "Memories" and "Hard Rock Cafe".

 

Meets 12:00noon the last Wednesday of every month.

DIRECTIONS FROM THE WEST:
1. Take Route 80 east
2. Get off last exit in NJ (Exit 73) to Fort Lee
3. Pass first traffic light (Center Ave.) and PA Administration Building on right
4. Bear to the right, and make right at 2nd traffic light (Lemoine Ave.)
5. Bear left, and make left at 1st traffic light (Main Street)
6. Go about 2 blocks to Central Road (restaurant is on right) and make left turn to enter parking lot.
7. Free parking is available in their parking lot directly across the street from the restaurant, which is on the right, directly after making turn onto Central Road.
