I was no longer a Port Authority employee on 9/11, but that day, of course, still affected me deeply. Three years later, on July 4, 2004, I had the opportunity to be with my PA siblings at the World Trade Center site. I was asked by the agency to be the announcer for the ceremonial laying of the cornerstone for what was then known as the Freedom Tower. It was my first time visiting Ground Zero. As I descended into The Pit, I was overcome with emotion knowing what happened there. In addition to the dignitaries present, there were survivors and families of those lost that day. I felt a deep obligation to do my job well as a tribute to those who died. While I've had many public speaking opportunities both before and since, none will ever be as important or as moving as that day.
