The day was starting to be a beautiful morning. I was enjoying a cup of coffee when my phone rang. It was my sister-in-law from Utica calland and did I have my TV on? She was upset and said something happened at the Twin Towers. I quickly turned my TV on.
I couldn't believe what I saw. I became glued to the TV. It just got worse. It was awful. I was working at the GWB at the time and my son was working at Newark Airport. When the second airplane hit the towers we were in shock. My son said we have to do something. We decided to donate blood at a local hospital. We started to go but the cops already had the road blocked and wouldn't let us through.
I was off that day, but returned the next day. The GWB was so well guarded. I didn't know what to expect. I parked my car and was walking toward the toll house when I was stopped by an armed National Guard or maybe a State Police. He wanted to know where I was going and wanted to see my ID. He did let me go after I showed my ID and told him I was going to work in the toll house.
The mood in the toll house was so grim. No one knew what was going on. We were all a little scared. The traffic was stopped. I remember an employee used a PA vehicle to bring people wo were stranded in NY but lived in NJ back over the bridge. Right or wrong, that is what happened that day.
I believe we lost a GWB police officer that day. He was among the many who were lost. It was a day I wish would never have happened.
