9/11

Margaret Heekin

It was an ordinary day tour. Up before dawn, packing breakfast for my husband, Sgt. Francis Heekin. This was out habit. Never in my wildest imagination could I have predicted the events to come only a few hours later. Stunning and horrifying all at once. Surrela and overwhelming. It does not feel like twenty-five years have passed.

For us and our 37 it may as well be yesterday. 9-11 will never be "over" for us. A poster with our lost sits as a silent reminder of just what was sacrificed that beautiful horrible Tuesday.

We forever honor them.

My husband narrowly escaped certain death, but was forever changed. We lost our innocence and realized just how dangerous "the job" can be. Every year we dread "the anniversary" but still stop to remember, say a silent prayer and hope to never have to endure a repeat of the cataclysm we call 9-11.
