On 9/11 2001 I was a paving mechanic at EWR. My crew and I where working in lot F doing a pavement failure when we received a phone call that a small plane crashed into the trade center we turned and looked and saw smoke coming from the building. We wrapped up what we were doing and headed back to building 80.
When we walked into the building the second plane was crashing into the 2nd building where my wife was working. I tried calling her office. No answer. Her building was the first building to come down. I didn’t believe she made it out but about 6 hours later I received a phone call from her she made it out and was with some of her co-workers in apartment up town they where safe. In that 6 hours I was walking around thinking she was dead and that the United States was under attack.
At the airport we took all of our snow equipment and blocked all entrances and exits. We went through the terminals and helped all stranded passengers. About two days later they let us go home and see our families. In the weeks and months after we continued helping at Ground Zero and securing the airport. It is Definitely a Day I will never forget.
